FAQs about Kristen

What is your training and education?

I am a licenced clinical social worker in the state of Oregon, and I have been practicing therapy since 2012. I have a Masters in Social Work from Portland State, and my Bachelors of Psychology is from Southern Oregon University. I have specialized training in working with people with depression, IDD/Autism, psychosis, and trauma.

What is your philosophy toward therapy and promoting change?

I believe humans are naturally social, creative, and peace-seeking. Thus, with proper support and care, each person can discover his or her truths and build skills to live a life informed by those truths. We all have natural strengths and weaknesses, and we each have unique life experiences that shape how these form us into the person we are (or think we are!). Learning about each of these and making sense of how they interact can pave the way for positive changes. Mental health is a small piece of overall health, and everything is connected!

Why did you choose to become a mental health professional?

I have a number of personal experiences that shaped my decision to make my profession one of healing. Growing up, I witnessed mental health struggles in my family. As a young child, it seemed “normal,” but after a while, I learned that there were words to describe what was going on and ways to make it better. Upon learning that, I felt both compelled to help and powerless about what to do. I also had my own experiences with personal therapy that were profound and wonderful. I believe it was a combination of wanting to help and understand my family, as well as seeing the power of therapy in my own life, that led me to want to study healing in a more formal sense. And it was through that journey that I became inspired to help all who struggles with mental health or life challenges.

Do I have to have had mental health treatment in the past? What if I’m uncertain about services?

Not at all! I am very experienced with working with folks who have had zero past treatment or contact with the mental health system. I pride myself on being able to make people feel safe, comfortable, and heard – either during the free consultation call or during the formal intake session. Reaching out for help can be very scary, and I want to make it as easy and painless as possible. I have years of experience in helping young adults enter mental health treatment for the first time, and I am confident in my ability to explain the process, learn about your problematic symptoms and/or experiences, and provide education about mental wellness. My goal is always to reduce the uncertainty and anxiety about seeking help. Please reach out, today, in spite of the discomfort. I am waiting to help!
